Are you up for the challenge of joining us in building a high performing veterinary program in an open admission, municipal government run facility in Northern Virginia? The Prince William County Police Department’s Animal Services Bureau is seeking a veterinarian for the new position of Clinic Veterinarian. This position will lead a veterinary staff in the development of a high performing veterinary program that is focused on the medical needs of the unowned animals of Prince William County. The Animal Services Bureau’s facility became fully operational in 2022 and services 3,000 – 4,000 animals per year, including dogs, cats, small domestic animals, birds, reptiles, poultry and some small livestock. The Animal Services Bureau is seeking to create a veterinary program that will increase the level of care we provide, maximize our positive outcomes, and provide greater services to our community.
About This Role
The Animal Services Bureau Veterinarian functions as manager and provider of the veterinary services program/services with the Animal Services Bureau. In your role you will:
Serve as the Veterinarian In Charge for the on-site licensed clinic
Ensure bureau compliance with VDACS veterinary related policies including functioning as the bureau’s supervising veterinarian and ensuring required staff complete euthanasia certification as needed
Manage population health through practicing high quality and cost-effective shelter medicine methods, encompassing both herd health and individual needs
Provide diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment planning for animals in custody in a manner that delivers high quality care while minimizing stress and discomfort
Serve as a resource for staff development and for Animal Services Center protocols including sanitary measures, disease prevention, feeding and general care
Provide expertise and documentation for enforcement related action including courtroom testimony
Provide Spay and Neuter surgeries, to include pediatric patients
Perform other general surgery needs to include but not limited to cryptorchid, mass removal, cherry eye, amputation, and simple hernia repair
Oversee and perform basic dental procedures
Participate in bureau related community outreach programs
In conjunction with ACB management team, develop and implement PWC TNVR program
Direct and manage a team of three staff to achieve the veterinary services goals of the bureau
Additionally, you may be asked to provide mentorship to interns and other duties as assigned.
Work is performed in a fast-paced environment requiring multitasking. Work environment will include exposure to zoonotic diseases, noxious gases, chemicals, loud noises, and fractious animals.
Minimum Education, Training & Experience Requirements
Medical degree (Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine) plus 3 years of post-residency experience.
Preferences
Preference may be given to candidates whose applications/resumes reflect and support any of the following:
Experience performing surgery in a high volume spay/neuter environment
Experience managing herd health or large populations of animals
Ability to provide basic care for pocket pets, livestock, exotics, or avians
Knowledge of Fear Free practices
Familiarity with animal cruelty/neglect prosecution requirements
Shelter Medicine Certification or experience in a shelter medicine setting
Valid DEA License
Special Requirements
Valid VA license to practice or be license eligible in VA and must obtain a valid license within 30 days of employment
Must possess a valid driver’s license
Must pass DMV check, polygraph, background investigation and employment physical
Must be able to lift 50 pounds
Must be able to stand for long periods of time for surgical procedures
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday regular schedule. This is a salaried essential personnel position that may be subject to emergency response requirements for bureau needs and may include on-call responsibilities.
